By focusing on the results of the latest studies on the effects of trauma on brain development, Timios has achieved ground-breaking work in the field of successfully re-parenting these traumatised children. We place these children that have been removed from their parents, for short, medium or long term in the care of our carefully selected and trained care givers or foster parents. Timios is a pioneer organisation that applies this cost effective and successful model in South Africa. The cost effectiveness of this model makes it also ideal for other previously disadvantaged communities. Because of the success that Timios has with our unique approach to foster care, we have been approached by different communities to provide training to care givers. Training teams of Timios travel across the country to identify and equip communities that may benefit from such training. Timios believes that we should take part in the upliftment of disadvantage communities and we currently train and mentor other organisations in Gauteng, North West and Limpopo Province on how to apply this model in their own unique communities.

FUNDING

As Timios is a non-profit organisation with a PBO Status (donations are tax deductable), funds need to be raised in order to service the diverse needs of every child. As part of the network’s efforts to raise the necessary funds to operate effectively, we, at this stage, host two different fund raising events during the year and to ensure a constant income, we also appreciate monthly donations from individuals and companies to assist in alleviating the financial burden of our homes, our traumatised children and our nation wide education program. Debit order forms are available if required.

Timios - Saving children through providing more than temporary safe havens. We establish homes where orphaned, abused and traumatised children regain their trust in adults and life through the care and love provided by our care givers. These care givers are equipped through our training programme to provide quality care for our children in need.

Statistics show that many placements of children in alternative care fail because of lack of training and support to care givers.

WHO ARE WE AND WHAT DO WE DO?

Timios Homes is an organisation that establishes homes where abused and traumatised children regain their trust in adults and life through the care and love provided by our care givers. We currently manage 58 homes in Tshwane with 89 children. According to the Child Care Act  of 1983, foster care is the preferred form of alternative care in South Africa. Yet more that 60 % of the children the standard foster care system of South Africa may either suffer from secondary abuse in the system, or may never be included in any relevant therapeutic programs. This results to failure of more that half of such placements. On the other hand more than 80 % of the children placed in the care of Timios rise above their circumstances and become achievers on sport and/or academic level due to intensive therapeutic programs and quality education of the Timios care givers.

OUR NAME

The word Timios is a Greek word and means treasure, precious and dearly counted for. The name was specifically chosen as we know and believe that every child is dear, precious and should be counted for.

OUR LOGO

The “i” in the word Timios shows a child with arms reaching for the sky - a typical sign of victory. The symbol used is also a tree. A tree with strong roots and leaves - a tree growing, reaching for the sun, flourishing. We at Timios want to show the world that there is hope for abused and traumatised children.

OUR SLOGAN - today we saved a child

It strongly expresses the action and difference that is made in the lives of our children. Remember that these children are the victims of neglect, trauma and abuse; therefore, providing a safe, loving environment that is monitored, managed and the care givers well trained and supported, we can give them the opportunity to be loved and healed, while their parents recover and rehabilitate. They truly are saved by the contributions, efforts and commitments of all involved!
